Members of the Briarcliff Middle School faculty challenged students to an exciting game of basketball in May as a culmination of the fifth annual Charity: Water campaign. The intention of the game was to raise awareness for the nonprofit group and bring hope to those in need. “Unfortunately, there are millions of people on this planet who do not have access to clean, safe water,” said science teacher Bob Iovino, who organized the campaign. “The students and faculty once again aimed to make a difference in the lives of those affected. Charity: Water is a nonprofit organization that uses 100 percent of the donations to build wells and other projects to help people gain access to life's most basic need. We are excited to begin this campaign for the fifth year and look forward to making a difference.” “There are simple solutions like drilled wells, spring protections and biosand filters that help provide clean water to communities around the world,” Mr. Iovino states on the school’s Charity: Water website. “The Briarcliff Middle School Greenhouse Club started this fundraising campaign to help Charity: Water build these types of projects around the world.” The website also notes that once projects are complete, Charity: Water sends photos and GPS coordinates to the school so that those involved can see the community they had helped.
Students were offered the opportunity to raise funds and present the donations during their homeroom classes. The seventh-grade homeroom of Mary Beth Craven and Mary Yulo raised the most money and was chosen to compete against the teachers in the basketball game, which the students won 54-51. The school raised more than $2,000 for the cause.
“Thank you to everyone for taking the time to look beyond yourself and put yourself in someone else’s shoes,” said Mr. Iovino. “You epitomize empathy at its best.”
