Congratulations to Briarcliff High School sophomores Feroze Mohideen, Karthik Rao, and Aishu Sritharan who are winners in the University of Waterloo International Avogadro Chemistry Exam competition. Aishu, Karthik, and Feroze each scored in the top 4% of the 4,401 students who took the exam worldwide. The Avogadro Exam consists of 40 multiple-choice questions that are administered in a 75-minute time frame. Some questions are easy, but most are probing and demanding. General topics include structure of matter, bonding, reactions, solutions, and gases, and a general knowledge of current affairs. Participants are also quizzed on certain mathematical skills closely related to chemistry and the exam includes questions on chemical topics not normally covered in high school chemistry. According to BHS science teacher Robert Saar students scoring in the upper echelon of the Avogadro exam are recognized for their “insightful and out-of-the box thinking.” Aishu, Karthik, and Feroze (pictured left to right) will have the opportunity to continue their excellent work in science next year as all three are enrolled in BHS Advanced Placement (AP) science courses starting in the Fall.
