Ceramic bowls carefully constructed by seventh-grade art students and high school ceramics students brought community members together for a good cause on June 3.
The annual Empty Bowls Dinner, the brainchild of Briarcliff Middle School teacher Jessica Dubin, allowed students to showcase their art while raising money to support to the Food Bank for Westchester.
“We raised more than $1,100 for the Food Bank for Westchester,” said Dubin.
Students’ bowls were on display in the cafeteria, and patrons generously made donations as they entered the special dinner. Soup, made by students and donated by the Landmark Diner in Ossining, offered a simple but fulfilling meal.
Attendees chose a bowl from those on display and enjoyed one another’s company. Volunteers helped serve the meal, while students offered to wash the bowls for patrons to take home after the meal.“There were about 60 bowls taken home that evening,” said Dubin. “The remaining bowls were donated to an agency that distributes them to individuals or families moving into new homes after hardship, homelessness or bouts of domestic violence. I hope the cheerful, handmade bowls will help light up those lives.”
