The Briarcliff Middle School Theater will transform into Neverland for three days in May and June as the school presents Disney’s Peter Pan Jr. Under the direction of Briarcliff’s Production Coordinator Ian Driver, with Musical Direction by community member Regina Leon, technical direction by James Britt, and choreography by Davyd H. Suber Jr., the show will open on Friday May 30 at 7 pm, with additional shows Saturday May 31 at 7 pm and Sunday June 1 at 2:30 pm. The community looks forward to the amazing middle school musical productions every year, and this year is certainly no different.
Disney’s Peter Pan Jr. tells the timeless tale of the boy who won’t grow up, who lives in Neverland with the other Lost Boys; fighting Indians, Pirates, and the elegant Captain Hook; flying with Tinker Bell and the fairies; and swimming with the Mermaids. Peter meets Wendy Darling and her brothers, and starts to think about what life would be like if he had a real mother. The cast has taken inspiration from all the versions of Peter Pan, with a special focus on the various ways Wendy has been represented since the story was first conceived by J.M. Barrie in 1904. The theme of growing up has particular resonance with the middle school cast.
Director Ian Driver wanted to pay homage to the generosity of the author of the original source material, J.M. Barrie. Barrie donated all rights from Peter Pan to the Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London. When the copyright expired in 1987, and Act of Parliament restored the royalty and insured that the copyright income would go to the children’s hospital for as long as the hospital exists. Driver has discussed with the cast the meaning and impact of this gift.
Disney’s Peter Pan Jr. includes music and lyrics by Sammy Cahn, Sammy Fain, Michelle Tumes, Xavier Atencio, George Bruns, Jack Lawrence, Frank Churchill, Winston Hibler, Ted Sears, Oliver Wallace and Ray Kelly. Music adapted & arranged and additional lyrics by Eric Svejcar. Book and additional lyrics are written by David Zellnik.
Tickets for Disney’s Peter Pan Jr. are available on showtix4u.com from now until Friday May 30 at 12 pm. All seats for all performances are $12.
