Todd Elementary School’s Video Book Club held its annual party and presentation for family and friends in early May. The school’s multipurpose room was transformed into a Hollywood theater poised for a premiere, with participants walking the red carpet and taking their seats among the lights and stars.
The premiered videos consisted of “book talks” that were written, edited, practiced and performed by the club’s members. The student videographers put the presentation together as a way of educating others about specific books they had enjoyed and encouraging them to read those literary selections.
After each clip, the featured student accepted an award, presented by library media specialist Tara Phethean, which included a certificate, a DVD of the evening’s performances, and a personal photo of the presentation.
Books chosen by the club members covered diverse genres. Biographies such as “Bethany Hamilton, Follow Your Dreams” by Michael Sandler were mixed with historical fiction, suspense, humor and fantasy books such as “The Big Big Big Book of Tashi” by Anna Fienberg, Barbara Fienberg and Kim Gamble. Following the presentations, students joined their family and friends for a reception.
This award-winning program has been recognized by the Westchester Library Association. It is a joint venture organized by Amy Kaplan of the Briarcliff Manor Library and Ms. Phethean.
“We were serving the same (student) population and felt we should do this project together,” explained Ms. Kaplan.
